My Story

I am Teju Lakkundi, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN), Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and owner, Nutrition For You.

I was born and brought up in the magnanimous city of Mumbai, India. My parents are from India. I went to school in Bombay and completed my Bachelor's in Mass Media (BMM) from Sophia College, Mumbai University.

In January 2008, I met a guy through my parents and agreed to a very traditional "arranged marriage"! It was the closest thing to 'love at first sight' for me at least. So many people I meet ask me about my 'arranged marriage' and it is by far the most magical love story you will ever hear from me... of course I'm biased!!!

After my gorgeous wedding in 2008, my husband and I moved to a small snow-covered town - Decatur, Illinois.  When I arrived in January, it was peak winter in Decatur IL. It felt like the whole town was covered with a blanket of snow. It was so calm, so quiet and very few people!!! What a contrast from the hustle and bustle of 1000's walking in every direction under the scorching heat in Mumbai!

I have been fortunate enough to explore and live in Illinois, Arkansas, Virginia, Wisconsin and now, I live with my husband and our two children in North Carolina.

The Beginning of the Nutrition Journey

I chose to pursue my Masters in the US, and because I had foreign credentials, I was advised to complete one science class before commencing the Masters program. My science course options were: astronomy, geology, microbiology and nutrition.

I chose nutrition because I didnt think I could put astronomy to much use and neither did I care about rocks or tiny creatures. So Nutrition it was! I thought nutrition would be interesting as I am new to this beautiful country and wanted to learn about food culture, fad diets, different cuisines and food trends here. Grocery stores had products from all over the globe, which I never heard of before! Thus started my journey in the field of nutrition.

As I delved into my nutrition course material, my interest grew deeper in the subject. Foodie, I have always been, but learning how the right food choices can impact health and be a contributing factor in the occurrence or prevention of chronic disease was inspiring. With a prior degree in Mass Media - specializing in Journalism, I was captivated by the idea of spreading the knowledge of optimal nutrition education to my community.

My areas of interest are particularly medical nutrition (diabetes, weight management, cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, cholesterol management). I became adept in diet analysis, nutrition counseling, menu planning, physical activity recommendations, grocery store tours, food shopping, eating local and food sustainability. I enjoy speaking to group audiences and large crowds on various nutrition topics. I have spoken on prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, carbohydrate counting, Mediterranean diets, anti-inflammatory diets, various special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, keto, Indian cooking, herbs and spices and more.
